Few things makes national politicians more excited about getting in front of a camera than those moments in which they get to rip into someone who said something about Israel. This week John Kerry has been quoted as saying:
“A two-state solution will be clearly underscored as the only real alternative. Because a unitary state winds up either being an apartheid state with second-class citizens—or it ends up being a state that destroys the capacity of Israel to be a Jewish state,”.
BAM! Off to the races! Secretary Kerry used the apartheid!
It is easy to understand how it is so easy for Kerry to get into trouble with this one. For most people when they hear the word apartheid they think of the racist South African government that for generations kept the black people down. How dare the Secretary of State say something so mean about those nice Jewish people! This outrage that people such as senators Cruz or Boxer get to express is partly because of this false understanding of the word apartheid.
The simple definition of apartheid is: any system or practice that separates people according to race, caste, etc.
Here is the deal. The state of Israel now controls most of the territory around Israel. They acquired this land through war. The people now living in these areas are divided by ethnicity. The people are divided into eight areas from which they have to travel through check points and have no right to vote. – Think about how much Americans would love to live like that. Here is the kicker. Given population and birth rates among all these people in a few years the Jews could find themselves outnumbered. Does this all start to sound familiar?
If a two state solution that provides real political power to both majority and minority groups is not put in place the pure definition of apartheid could become a real thing. Which means that John Kerry actually told the truth. Politicians have difficult times when the trouble they are in comes about because they say the truth.
For us here are Live Like a Republican we like this. Everyone once in a while is is nice to see an American politician get off their knees when it comes to Israel.
